Lord Dattatreya is the incarnation of all three major Hindu gods: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. A renowned sage, he is said to have attained enlightenment not through a single guru, or teacher, but by the natural world itself. A king once encountered Dattatreya and noticed the joy and light radiating from his face. When the king asked how he became so wise, Dattatreya explained that he had 24 gurus, all of whom were different elements or animals in nature, who taught him the ultimate truths of existence.
His first guru was Mother Earth herself:
"Mother Earth is my first guru. She taught me to hold lovingly in my heart all those who trample me, scratch me, and hurt me, just as she does. She taught me to give them my best, remembering that their acts are normal and natural from their standpoint."
