"One of Durga's most famous conquests was the near invincible demon, Mahishasura, who in the form of a supernatural buffalo had managed to overcome the gods. For killing this colossus she became known as "Mahishasura-mardini", one of her most popular epiphets to this day. She is generally viewed as a warrior goddess and is often invoked on the occasion of battle so that her worshipper may gain victory. Just as the Goddess Durga can never be overcome in battle, the material world or illusion is entirely insurmountable by any endeavor. It is only possible to become free of material bondage when one attracts the grace of the Goddess."
